Network Ports and Cables

     - Monday, March 22, 2004

On today's show we have network jacks and the cables that plug into them. Most computers these days have both a ethernet network port as well as a modem port. The network port is used for connecting to your home network, especially if you have high speed cable or dsl internet access. The modem port is for connecting to your telephone jack.

Each type has it's own cable. The modem cable you're already familiar with. It's just your standard telephone wire. The network port uses a similar looking cable with 2 differences: The jack is bigger, and the cable is much thicker.

Here's a picture that shows the 2 jacks. Both look very similar, just that the network jack on the right is bigger.

On the left is an ethernet cable. Notice the bigger jacks at the end of the cable. Usually, it's just called CAT 5 cabling. Because of the large amount of data being carried by the wires, extra insulation is necessary. You also have to be careful about bending it. No more than a gentle curve, please!

On the right is a standard telephone cord which you can use with your modem.
