Gmail v Pop
     - Saturday, January 08, 2005
After trying Gmail for a couple months now, I've decided to move off of it to a new personal email address. Not because Google email isn't great, in fact, I've really loved it. The service is dependable, the features are excellent, and the storage limit is, well, awesome.
But now that I run my own email server at home, this negates much of the reason I switched to Gmail in the first place. One gigabyte of storage is nice, but now I'm only limited to the space available on my hard drive.
Plus Gmail doesn't have an easy way to delete messages. Identifying larger messages to delete isn't possible. It would be nice if you could see the size of each email. Not that I ever got even close to using all my free space, but at the rate I get email, it won't be long. And there's just no sense in having my mail stored somewhere else.
I'll be giving up the ease and convenience of web based mail, but in return I think I'll be getting lots more flexibility and security, since I'll be handing it myself.
I'd still encourage people to try Gmail. It's in a class by itself well above all other free email services. I have invites available if you're interested in trying it. Send me a message and I'll send out the invite.

I like gmail because my Windows system is less than a rock when it comes to stability, this way I never have to loose anything.
