MailEnable Username Syntax
     - Saturday, July 17, 2004
Last month I'd posted about how I'm running my own mail server using MailEnable Standard Edition. I've added about 5 domains to it. It was working well: receiving mail, sending mail, and even redirecting mail. Except when I tried to retrieve the mail for any of the last 4 domains I setup using a mail client. It's been bugging the crap out of me! So, this week's project was to figure that out.
After uninstalling, reinstalling, tweaking, shouting, and just a little foot stomping, the secret started to unravel. MailEnable's localhost's properties is installed with a default post office, which is why I had no problem getting mail from the first domain. So, blissfully, I unchecked the default option. Then I couldn't get any mail from any of the domains. After some more foot stomping, I figured out that without a default mailbox the usernames in the client software need to be appended with the post office name. This way MailEnable can know which mailbox to authenticate the user against.
Now that I look, it sorta says that all over the application. If only I'd read the client configuration guide I posted last month too!
Here's the page that helped me finally crack the nut:
ME020068: What syntax are the credentials I pass to MailEnable services?
