Linksys Dynamic Routing Working Mode: Gateway or Router
     - Monday, July 12, 2004
Always on the lookout for potential security holes, a friend asked me to find out what the Router or Gateway option meant on his Linksys Cable/DSL Router. This option is pretty common to most Linksys Routers. On the router administration page, you'll probably find this option under the Dynamic Routing tab.
Most of you probably have this option set to Gateway. You'll be happy to hear that's perfectly fine. This option is best when you're router is directly connected to the internet. For large networks, however, with many routers, many of which aren't connected directly to the internet, the Dynamic Routing feature helps by directing traffic to exactly the right section of your network. This helps reduce the overall traffic on the network. A home network, even a large home network, just isn't busy enough to notice a performance difference in your home network's speed.
For those of you that are curious about why those TX (transmit) and RX (receive) settings are disabled, I have some nuggets about that too. Use these options to select the special network protocol that's used between routers. Of course you won't need a special protocol, because most of us just have the one router and are using the Gateway option.
In the manual, see the Dynamic Routing section near the bottom
