Registering a Domain Name
     - Sunday, June 06, 2004Registered www.complexdistress.com tonight. Got it for only 9 bucks, too. Domain names sure have come down in price. I remember the (first?) days when they were $75 each. I've started publishing the site to my local webserver, and it's all set to go.
Registering a domain name is really an easy process. Just head on over to EscapeOrbit.com to pick one up. The objective here is to use a registrar that will sell you the domain, and make it easy to manage. The domain name process sounds complicated, but it's really simple.
All websites are actually located at a specific IP address, but IP addresses are numbers and hard to remember. So instead of using IP addresses, people enter domain names. The idea is that when someone puts your domain name into their web browser, the web browser goes out on a hunt to find the actual address of the website. Each domain name has the address of what's called a Name Server. The Name Server knows the actual address of the website. So that a single machine doesn't get overwhelmed with requests for IP address, there are many name servers. Almost all web hosting providers offer a name server which will keep a record of the actual IP address of your site. Sometimes the hosting is done by one organization, and the name server service is offered by a different organization, but that's pretty rare.
So the real objective of a registrar is to know which name server knows the actual IP address of your website. So go get your very own website, but be ready to tell the registrar the address of the name servers for your hosting option.
