Re-install, Reboot, and Pray

     - Thursday, June 03, 2004

Well, it's been one of those nights. Unfortunately, I have to retract my nice words about upgrading to XP Pro. Got home tonight to find that when I use Remote Desktop (the reason I upgrade to Pro), the local user account is logged off. That means that several processes I run, including my web server and video recorder, won't work after I've used Remote Desktop.

Not sure this next part is related, but it seems that my digital video recorder software didn't seem to want to update the program guide after the upgrade. Started by searching the forums to see what I should do. After about 3 hours of trying everything I could think of and find, including sending emails to support, I finally happened about a post that looked promising. So after upgrading MDAC, MSJet, and .Net Framework in Safe Mode, and re-installing Beyond TV3, it finally is downloading the program guide again.

The next problem I had was with my remote control. Yes, I actually have a remote for my computer. After a clean uninstall and reinstall, it seems to be behaving again too.

In the end, I've spent about 7 hours to get from XP Home to XP Pro, and I still haven't found any good uses for Pro. I was hopeful about Remote Desktop, but the whole logging off issue bothers me, and it really didn't seem any faster than VNC.
