ShieldsUp!

From the Gibson Research Corporation, ShieldsUp! has been a longtime favorite tool for checking your internet security. Services include scanning your file sharing exposure, checking the most common ports, and a detailed report of all service ports. Recently improved, the site can now scan any individual port on your machine.

If you're using a broadband router, the site will likely be scanning it, instead of your computer. That's just fine. As long as your router is secure and you're computer is behind the router there's no problem. Also, you can make on your router more secure by simply setting the DMZ address to an IP address which doesn't exist on your LAN (such as 192.168.1.50). That'll make sure your ports appear stealthed and not just closed. Ensure your computer is never assigned that address by setting the DHCP server in your router to start providing addresses with a higher number. I also forward port 113 to that same non-existant internal IP address.

To access the scanning services, click on the link below then select the ShieldsUp! icon. About half-way down the page under Hot Spots is the link to SheildsUp!
