How To Buy A New Computer

And not get ripped off in the process . . .

Even the cheapest computer in the store will probably do everything you want. You should ask to see this computer first. It should have Windows XP already installed. With a monitor and possibly a printer, it should cost no more than $500 after any rebates. Once you're looking at the lowest of the low-end computers, decide if there's anything it's missing that you really want, such as a CD burner so you can make your own CD's. Now you can decide if the increase in price of the higher-end model is worth that extra feature you want.

What you're probably looking at is an eMachines computer. They've been around for a while, and while they're a low cost manufacturer, their products are pretty good at this point. Still if you end up getting one, I'd recommend getting it at a store like BestBuy or Wal-Mart. This way you'll have someplace to go and yell if there's a problem. Another option is to buy a Dell computer from their online store. They often have deals on free shipping and upgraded memory or CD burners. Dell is just a bit more expensive than eMachines.

The last bit of advise I have for you is to NOT BUY any other items at the store when you get your computer. Steer clear of printer accessories such as cables and cartriges. Say no to power strips, mouse pads, wrist rests, a desk, etc. You can always come back for it later. So just save those items until you're sure you need them.

Finally, make sure you fill out those rebate forms and mail them in!
